I’ll be traveling soon with Tessa into brrrrrrrrr-cold Wisconsin and I’ll just admit it – it’s stressing me out. Mostly I’ve been stressed because she’s recovering from a double ear infection and I really didn’t want her to be sick while traveling and in more pain because of the air pressure in the plane. However, I think she’ll be fully recovered before we leave.

That being said, I have still sought advice from my mommy friends and pediatrician (who had some great suggestions). But this is my solicitation to all of you. What are your most helpful hints with traveling with an infant, particularly into cold weather?

Thank you!

BTW – This is Tessa in my baby bunting from when I lived in Wisconsin . . .a long time ago. Precious!

Have her drink or suck on a pacifier on the way up and on the way down so that she is swallowing to relieve the pressure. We also travel with a thin pillow, so Owen can lay on it and snuggle on our laps. In retrospect, traveling with a 4 month old was really easy (except for all the stuff you have to bring). You’ll be fine!!

Yup, planning in nursing or giving a bottle during the way up and down. Also got a great suggestion to wear Tessa in a Bjorn through the airport. Smart!

The little one will be easier than my sister who will be taking her 2- and 5-year olds. But helpful hints are always welcome!

I took my stroller and car seat (travel system) with me to the gate. If there is an empty seat you can take on the car seat instead of holding baby in your lap. If the flight is full they will just gate check it for you. We were lucky, three out of the four flights we have been on we were able to use the car seat!

Take a baby carrier without metal and you can walk through security with Tessa strapped to you, if there’s metal, the TSA guys make you take off the carrier and put it on the belt. Also, if traveling alone, choose one that lets you go to the bathroom easily with Tessa strapped to you.

If you take your pump, be prepared to dismantle it at security, they treat it like a computer. If you can, check it.

Good suggestions, ladies! Though I can’t believe the pump story, Kim – I hope that doesn’t happen!

    Wish me luck.
